This course will shed light on (local) distribution systems that differ from both the traditional and modern distribution chains (e.g. direct sales, farmers’ markets, pick-your-own farms, home delivery, community supported agriculture). The course will open by giving an insight into the economic basis of short food supply chains. After an overview of international experiences, the focus will move to the valorization and marketing strategies. The potential of partnerships between producers’ organizations and retail companies for the direct selling of local products, as well as the experience of farmers’ markets are discussed. The focus will then move to the regulatory aspects of promoting sustainable food supply chains. Finally, new sustainable approaches to create value and stimulate innovation and growth in wine regions will be discussed. The course includes several field visits and presentations by farmers and entrepreneurs.
